Summary
We help maintain OpenSnowcat, an open-source data engineering solution that lets businesses collect and enrich data for further processing or analysis. We are taking ownership of a technically demanding platform, with our efforts remaining effective over a long-term engagement. Our ongoing work strongly supports the platform’s security and stability for business users and developers. The maintenance engagement involves variable work volumes and unique technical challenges, requiring in-depth Scala expertise and great attention to detail.
About the Solution
Our client maintains OpenSnowcat – an open-source fork of Snowplow under the Apache 2.0 License. The solution is a behavioral data and event platform for large-scale enterprise data collection, enrichment, routing, and loading. While mature and in-demand, it requires ongoing maintenance and configuration, as the technology environment it’s typically used in changes over time.
Challenges and How We Fit In
What the Client Needed:
- Deep Technical Expertise: As a data engineering tool, OpenSnowcat demands extensive knowledge of Scala, an understanding of the modern data-processing tech environment, and experience with software maintenance.
- Flexible Availability: The project involves both stretches of low activity and highly intense moments when a critical update needs to be ready ASAP. The challenge for our client was finding a developer who could handle both scenarios and switch as needed.
What We Brought:
- Data Engineering Mastery: With multiple data engineering projects in our portfolio, a strong Scala team, and over 16 years of software development experience, we have the knowledge needed.
- Operational Flexibility: We are able to dynamically scale up the hours we dedicate to OpenSnowcat when a need arises for a critical update.
- Open-Source Experience: SysGears developers have made major contributions to several open-source projects over a long period, making us well-suited as a committed contractor for focused maintenance.
What Our Work Includes
Continuous Debugging
We reproduce, isolate, and eliminate issues reported by businesses and individual developers who use the solution in their data pipelines. We prioritize issues by impact, from minor errors that don’t affect output to critical emerging defects that require immediate attention.
Security Updates
Depending on the data it processes, OpenSnowcat can handle vast amounts of sensitive information that could be damaging if accessed by malicious actors. This is why keeping its dependencies and security controls up to date is a consistent priority.
Compatibility with Data Flow Components
External services that make up the rest of enterprise businesses’ data pipelines often evolve, changing how integrations and connections work. These changes require potentially major adjustments to the OpenSnowcat platform “under the hood”, while the user-facing functionality must remain unchanged.
Ongoing Configuration and Improvement
We also introduce small-scale improvements and optimizations, and integration options to the codebase to keep the platform a secure, reliable tool for data engineers. These help our client proactively avoid emerging issues and keep the solution up to date with the broader data engineering tech ecosystem.
Example: AWS Kinesis Compatibility
During our partnership with the client, Amazon Web Services deprecated a library version crucial to OpenSnowcat’s interoperability with Kinesis. This required a transition to a newer version whose core principles differed significantly from the original, now-unsupported code. We adapted OpenSnowcat’s codebase to follow these changes, ensuring continued compatibility with AWS Kinesis, while keeping all user-facing processes and controls the same as before the update.
This is one of many such examples of our maintenance work on OpenSnowcat, where another service in the data engineering field changes its product, API, or library, forcing other tools to adjust as well. We address the issue promptly and directly in OpenSnowcat’s codebase, saving businesses the time and effort it would otherwise take to troubleshoot the dependency or issue themselves.
A Word From Our Client
“SysGears is an integral part of maintaining OpenSnowcat. Their Scala expertise and responsiveness keep the platform reliable and secure, ensuring business continuity for every company running OpenSnowcat in production.”
